Pitru Paksha 2024: Honoring Ancestors with Reverence and Rituals

Pitru Paksha, a 16-day lunar period dedicated to paying homage to one’s ancestors, holds immense significance in Hindu tradition. This year, Pitru Paksha will be observed from Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to Wednesday, October 2, 2024. During this period, Hindus express gratitude and seek blessings from their departed forefathers through various rituals and offerings, ensuring peace and prosperity for their families.

Significance of Pitru Paksha

Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraadh or Mahalaya Paksha, is rooted in the belief that our ancestors' blessings play a crucial role in our well-being. It is believed that during this period, the souls of the departed descend to the earth to receive offerings from their living descendants. Performing rituals during Pitru Paksha is considered essential for attaining salvation (moksha) for the departed souls and freeing them from the cycle of rebirth.

The Legend of Pitru Paksha

The origin of Pitru Paksha is often traced back to the Mahabharata. It is said that when Karna, the great warrior, ascended to heaven after his death, he received gold and jewels as food. Puzzled, he asked Indra the reason for such offerings. Indra explained that despite Karna’s generosity on earth, he never performed rituals for his ancestors. Realizing his oversight, Karna sought an opportunity to rectify his mistake. He was granted permission to return to earth for 16 days to offer food and water to his ancestors. This period is now observed as Pitru Paksha.

Rituals and Practices during Pitru Paksha

Tarpan (Offering Water):

One of the most common rituals, Tarpan involves offering water mixed with sesame seeds, barley, and flowers to the ancestors. This is usually done near water bodies such as rivers or ponds, with specific mantras to invoke and satisfy the souls of the departed.

Pinda Daan:

Pinda Daan is a ritual offering of rice balls mixed with sesame seeds and barley flour. This offering is believed to provide nourishment to the souls of ancestors, ensuring their contentment and peace.

Shradh Puja:

The Shradh Puja is a significant ritual where food is prepared and offered to Brahmins or priests, symbolizing the feeding of ancestors. The food typically includes kheer (sweet rice pudding), puris, lentils, and other traditional dishes favored by the departed.

Feeding the Needy:

On certain days of Pitru Paksha, feeding the needy, offering food to animals such as cows and crows, and performing charity are encouraged. These acts of kindness are believed to please the ancestors and bring blessings.
