She then pierced his neck with her sword and cut off his head. Thus, she killed Mahishasura and restored peace and order in the universe.

Another legend is the story of her worship by the gopis (cowherd girls) of Vrindavan. According to this story, the gopis were ardent devotees of Lord Krishna and wanted him as their husband. To fulfill their desire, they performed a vow (vrata) for a month in honor of Goddess Katyayani. They would wake up before dawn and bathe in the Yamuna River.
