Naga Chaturthi

Naga Chaturthi is an important day connected with the Serpent Gods & Goddesses. It is a known fact that there are a lot of Serpent Gods & Goddesses (Naga Devatas) like Vasuki, Karkotaka, Thakshaka etc., Worshipping the Naga Devatas and offering milk to Naga Devata idols on this auspicious Naga Chaturthi day relieves one off malefic effects of shadow entities Rahu and Ketu. Also sin occurring out of killing snakes will get subsided and the malefic influence will not fall over the next generation. Usually women at home will wake up early and observe Naga Chaturthi fast for the well-being of their husband and children. This is a traditional practice which is followed even today in some families comprising of strict values. Others who do not observe fast will reach out to temples, perform pooja at home and donate food.

In some way or the other Naga Chaturthi is observed in almost all of our homes till date. Snakes are considered to be sensitive and divine. Harming them will bring whole lot of troubles. From a young age our ancestors and elders/ parents grow their children educating about this fact. Also, when offered whole hearted pooja, the Serpent Gods & Goddesses or the Naga Devatas offer boon to one who thoroughly deserves. Naga Raksha is something which is hard to break. Like how harmful the snakes are considered, equally they protect a particular family against all odds and malefic influences if they are pleased. So, it is important to gain the blessings of Snake Gods (Naga Devatas) for a healthy living.

On the auspicious Naga Chaturthi day one should

• Wake up before sunrise
• Take head bath
• Cleanse the house thoroughly
• Worship your family deity
• Worship Naga Devata by performing Pooja and Abishekam
• Observe fast partially or throughout the day based on convenience related to health & profession
• Receive blessings from elders at home
• Food feeding the poor
• Visit Snake (Naga Devata) temple
• Offer Milk to Snake Gods (Naga Devata) remembering our family members and the wish we possess
• Coming around or circumambulating the Snake shrine
• Chanting Mantras related to Naga Devatas or “Om Sri Naga Devatabyo Namaha” 108 times
• Try to follow brahmacharyam (celibacy)

• Avoid sensual talks or practices with others
• Avoid wearing black colored clothes
• Avoid deceit, gambling and talking ill of others
• Avoid Nail cut, haircut, alcohol and consumption of non-vegetarian food
