Mahasankataharachaturthi: Ganesha ends your Sorrows

What is Mahasankataharachaturthi?

Maha Sankataharachaturthi is a special form of Sankashti Chaturthi, a monthly festival that falls on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the moon's waning phase (Krishna Paksha). Sankashti means "relief from troubles," and Chaturthi means "the fourth day." Therefore, Sankashti Chaturthi is the day Lord Ganesha relieves his devotees from their troubles and grants their wishes.

Maha Sankatahara Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning lunar fortnight) in Bhadrapada (August - September). The festival is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God of wisdom, prosperity, and success. The combination of lunar and stellar influences makes this day very auspicious and powerful for worshipping Lord Ganesha.

What is the legend of Mahasankataharachaturthi?

There are many legends associated with Mahasankataharachaturthi, but one of the most popular ones is as follows:

Once, a king named Shursen was very righteous and pious. He had a beautiful daughter named Devasena, who was devoted to Lord Ganesha. She used to observe Sankashti Chaturthi fast every month without fail. One day, she decided to observe Mahasankataharachaturthi fast in the month of Magha with great fervor and faith. She performed all the rituals and prayers with utmost sincerity and dedication.

Meanwhile, a demon named Durgamasura had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by any weapon or God except Lord Ganesha. He used his boon to create havoc in the three worlds and torment the gods and sages. He also kidnapped Devasena from her palace and took her to his abode. He wanted to marry her forcefully, but she refused to give up her chastity and devotion to Lord Ganesha. She prayed to Lord Ganesha to rescue her from the demon's clutches.

Lord Ganesha heard her prayers and decided to help her. He took the form of a Brahmin boy and approached Durgamasura. He challenged him to a game of dice and said that if he won, he would get Devasena as his bride, but if he lost, he would have to give up his life. Durgamasura agreed to the challenge, thinking he could easily defeat a mere boy. However, he did not know Lord Ganesha was the master of all games and had control over fate and fortune.

The game began, and Lord Ganesha used his divine powers to manipulate the dice in his favor. He won every round and finally defeated Durgamasura. He then revealed his true form as Lord Ganesha and killed Durgamasura with his tusk. He freed Devasena from her captivity and blessed her with a happy and prosperous life. He also blessed all his devotees who observed Mahasankataharachaturthi fast with grace and protection.
